Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has sent an email to the employees of the company on Tuesday informing them that they would be allowed to work from home permanently, even after the coronavirus pandemic lockdown is lifted.  However, Twitter staff whose jobs require a physical role, such as maintaining servers, will come to the office. Working from home will be compulsory for employees based in our Hong Kong, Japan, and South Korea offices. The decision came after Twitter told its work-from-home measures during the coronavirus lockdown had been a great success.

Twitter said it is unlikely to open its offices before September. The San Francisco-based social media firm was among the first to move to work from home plan in March due to the COVID -19 crisis and plans to continue that policy indefinitely. The company has also planned to cancel all in-person events for the rest of the year, and it will re-evaluate its plan for 2021 later.

The company said that the reopening of its offices will be very careful, intentional, office by office and gradual when the conditions permit. Twitter upped its employee allowance for work from home supplies to USD 1,000.

“We were uniquely positioned to respond quickly and allow workers to work from home given our emphasis on decentralization and supporting a distributed workforce capable of working from anywhere,” a Twitter spokesperson said.

He further added, “The past few months have proven we can make that work. So if our employees are in a role and situation that enables them to work from home and they want to continue to do so forever, we will make that happen.”

Twitter human resources head Jennifer Christie said, “The Company would never probably be the same in case of work structure. Managers who didn’t think they could manage remote teams will have a different perspective. I think we won’t go back.”

Twitter said, “We are proud of the early action we took to protect the health of our employees and that will remain our top priority.” Twitter will also be providing reimbursement for additional daycare expenses incurred by parents working with the, as the company’s normal daycare is also closed due to the shutdown.

The company is planning to reimburse all employees, including hourly workers, for home office set up expenses.  The expenses include home office equipment, desks, and desk chairs. Twitter said, “We are working with vendors to ensure all work-from-home needs are met properly.” The company will also be carrying out all interviews at Twitter via video conferencing.

Another Twitter spokesperson said, “We’ve been thoughtful in how we’ve approached this crisis from the beginning, we were one of the first companies to move to a work-from-home model, we’ll continue to be, and we’ll continue to put the safety of our people and communities first.”

The company said in a statement, “We’ll continue sharing information as we navigate these changes. Our goal is to reduce the prospect of spreading COVID-19.”

Twitter asserted. “Opening offices will be our decision, when and if our employees come back, will be theirs,”

This announcement came after Facebook and Google urged employees to work from home until 2021.
