Solar-Powered Car Coming in 2021

The first prototype of an electric car covered in solar panels has been created by the company Lightyear. The car, Lightyear One, should be delivered to consumers by 2021. The company, founded in 2016, was created by a group of engineering students who won 2013, 2015, and 2017 solar-powered World Solar Challenge races.

The creators say that the car will get 450 miles of range from its built in battery. The car’s roof and hood are covered in solar panels which can charge the car’s battery up to 12 km of range an hour. The solar panels are covered in safety glass to protect them from any damage. Lightyear also claims that these solar panels are 20 percent more efficient than other models.

If the car was only powered by the solar panels, it wouldn’t get that far…this car should be seen as an electric car with solar panels to help. The car can be charged like a traditional electric car. It will get 507 km of range per hour of charge. Lightyear One can go from 0 to 100 km/h in 10 seconds, thanks to its four electric motors.

Lightyear is taking preorders for the first 500 Lightyear One cars. It costs $135,000 for a reservation. The starting price for the car by itself is around $170,000.
