Apple Inc. at its event unveiled 4 iPhone 12 models capable of connecting to a much faster 5G cellular network, bringing new attention to the wireless technology that investors believe will lead millions of customers to upgrade their devices.
The iPhone 12 Mini starts at USD 699, while the 6.1-inch regular iPhone 12 starts at USD 799. The iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone 12 Pro Max start at USD 999 and USD 1,099.
The new 5G-ready devices come with an all-screen Super Retina XDR display, LiDAR Scanner, a Ceramic Shield front cover, and the iPhone line’s best camera system.
The new Apple phones are powered by the company’s in-house-designed A14 Bionic mobile processor, made by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. using the latest 5-nanometer technology which is at present the industry’s most advanced.
As with the iPhone 12, both the Pro and Pro Max receive sub—6GHz and mmWave 5G connectivity, ensuring the devices should work with various 5G networks major carriers around the world. The new ‘Ceramic Shield’ technology to its flagship devices will help reduce the likeliness of cracked screens. This tougher front cover aims to improve the shatter ability, so to speak, which Apple claims improves drop performance by 4x compared with iPhone 11 Pro.
The 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro and 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max will now have a flat-edge design and an edge-to-edge OLED display with reduced borders. These square edges give the device a more classic look reminiscent of older model iPhones. They are aesthetically different too.
The back for these new devices is matte glass and the phone also has a stainless steel band, around the edges.
Two of the new iPhones- the 6.1-inch Phone 12 Pro and the 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max – have high-end triple cameras. The other two have dual cameras, like the iPhone 11.
The iPhone 12 Pro features also a new 7-element lens Wide camera with an ƒ/1.6 aperture, the fastest now available in the iPhone line, and promising improvements in low-light video and photos. The Ultra-
Wide camera has a 12-degree field of view, while the Telephoto camera has a 52 mm focal length, bringing the optical zoom range to 4x.
Apple further pushed the photography boundaries with the iPhone 12 Pro Max, adding a 47 percent larger sensor behind the wide camera that offers about 87 percent improvement in low-light photos thanks and larger 1.7um pixels. Apple also swapped out the telephoto on the 12 Pro for a 2.5x (65mm equivalent) telephoto lens.
All the new Phones will be shipped without earphones and power adapters in the box as part of efforts to cut costs and waste.
The regular iPhone 12 and the iPhone Pro will be ready for preorders on October 16 and start shipping on October 23. Preorders for the iPhone 12 Mini and the iPhone Pro Max will have to wait for November 6, with shipping to begin on November 13.
Apple CEO Tim Cook introduced 5G support in the company’s next-generation flagship phones and unveiled the iPhone 12 saying, “A new era for iPhone, 5G will bring new level performance to the iPhone 12 models.”
